Fujifilm's Latest Drop: The X-E5, Packs a Punch in a Compact Package
Fujifilm's latest addition to its X-E range, the X-E5, has hit the scene, boasting notable upgrades over its predecessors. The X-E5 can be seen as an interchangeable lens version of the X100, featuring Fujifilm's latest 40-megapixel APS-C sensor and 7-stop in-body image stabilization (IBIS). Let's dive in!
This Time, Steady as She Goes
For the first time in the X-E series, 7-stop IBIS comes to the party, ensuring your shots stay sharp, even when you're not. This could help you gain about 7 stops of handholding freedom[1]. The new sensor also means video specs take a leap, with options like 6.2K at 30 frames per second (with a 1.23 crop) and 4K 30 fps full-sensor video[1].
Classic Design, Modern Mods
The X-E5 retains the classic rangefinder-style aesthetic but with a few nifty tweaks. The body design embraces a single-piece metal top plate, bringing a premium feel and improved tactile dial operation[2]. The viewfinder, a 2.36-million dot 0.62x magnification OLED EVF, boasts a flush-fitting design, making it even sleeker[2]. The back sports a 3.0-inch, 1.62-million dot 3-axis touchscreen LCD, offering flexible framing and interface control[2].
Add a Pinch of Creativity
For the very first time in the X Series, the X-E5 offers a customizable Film Simulation dial that lets users switch easily between Fujifilm’s colorful profiles and even apply saved "recipes," fostering creative expression[2].
Camera Love Affair Continues, but with a Little Disappointment
On the downside, disappointment brews as the weather sealing, often a hallmark of Fujifilm’s cameras, is no where to be found[1]. Additionally, the viewfinder remains petite, with the same resolution (2.36M dot, 1025 x 768) as the older model[1].
Pricing and Availability
The X-E5 will set you back $1,699 for the body only and $1,899 for a kit that includes Fujifilm’s new 23mm f/2.8R WR lens, which disappointingly won't be sold separately until late 2025[1]. Preorders are open at Adorama or B&H Photo now.
For those who can't get enough of earbuds and audio gear, our favorite earbuds got a refresh. Keep an eye out for the QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen), available for preorder now[3]. And, if speakers are more your jam, check out the SoundLink Plus and SoundLink Micro (2nd Gen) from Bose[3]. Hear the rhythm in those aforementioned deals.
On a different note, Qualcomm recently demonstrated its Snapdragon AR1 chipset, designed for smart glasses. This state-of-the-art tech promises faster response, better battery life, and enhanced privacy by processing a small language model on the smart glasses themselves[4]. So, expect the Meta Ray-Bans, powered by the Snapdragon AR1, to become even more responsive.
