Volvo conducts real-world trials of electric luxury sedans on open highways

The streets of Gothenburg, Sweden, recently played host to a camouflaged electric prototype from Volvo, marking a significant step in the premium brand's electrification strategy. The vehicle, classified as a 2025 model, is a fully electric sedan with a maximum motor output of **200 kW** and automatic transmission.

Measuring **4,851 mm in length** and **1,876 mm in width**, with a curb weight of **1,800 kg** and a total permissible weight of **2,350 kg**, the prototype is distinct from the recently presented electric luxury sedan ES90. Unlike the ES90, which boasts a length of 5,000 mm and a width of 1,940 mm, the new prototype is likely to offer less power.

The prototype is expected to adopt Volvo's **800-volt electrical architecture**, a feature that promises faster charging, greater efficiency, and enhanced performance. This new architecture is already in use in the ES90, which can add 300 km of range in just 10 minutes at 350 kW DC fast charging stations, offering a total driving range of up to 700 km under the WLTP cycle.

The range of the presumed lower-positioned model, according to the WLTP standard, is expected to be less than that of the ES90, positioning the new model as a high-performance, long-range electric sedan. However, Volvo has yet to reveal the vehicle's official name or exact release date.

The prototype has a so-called ownership-bound exemption permit, typically used for test vehicles in the development stage. This suggests that the vehicle could soon join Volvo’s electric lineup, potentially as a new addition separate from the ES90 sedan.

Volvo's aggressive move towards electric vehicles is further confirmed by the upcoming debut of the Volvo EX60, a luxurious minivan expected to hit the market in early 2026. With the Gothenburg prototype serving as a key next step in Volvo’s electrification strategy, it seems that the brand is set to expand its electric offerings beyond the ES90.
