Video Game Pioneer Quake Inducted into World Video Game Hall of Fame
Freakin' Quake FINALLY Makes Its Way to the World Video Game Hall of Fame!
Shock! Awe! Bloody hell, Quake finally deserves a spot in the World Video Game Hall of Fame! Sure, it's about damn time, with Halo kicking its ass since 2017 and all. What the freakin' heck was going on here? But hey, no sweat, Quake snagged one of the four inductions for 2025.
The Hall of Fame page sings praises like a groupie at a rock concert, declaring Quake a badass 3D first-person shooter built with mouse-friendly mechanics in mind. Back in the days when we were still gaming like cavemen with the keyboard, that was a revolutionary move.
Quake was no slouch technologically, far surpassing its legendary grandfather, Doom (which, by the way, already holds a spot in the Hall). But it was more than just the step into real-time 3D that made Quake a game changer. Extensive mod support, revolutionary server-client architecture, and the foundation for esports united to give Quake a life well beyond that of your average game.
The Hall of Fame also noted that Quake's code is a living legacy, with the Quake Engine Family Tree blooming with branches interconnecting numerous IPs like Heretic, Hexen, Doom, Call of Duty, and more. The legacy of Quake's legacy code is truly monumental.
The Hall of Fame claimed that Quake's impact touches almost every gaming category imaginable, but only a few games' bones—if you will—continue to resonate in modern ones, over 25 years after its release.
Co-creator John Romero was as pumped as a player scoring a last-second victory in a Quake tournament, calling the induction a "huge honor." Quake was joined in the Hall of Fame majors by 1981 arcade classic Defender, N64 shooter GoldenEye 007, and virtual pet Tamagotchi.
