Viasat Introduces HaloNetTM Collection, Targeting Revolution in Near-Earth Communication Systems

Viasat's HaloNet Transforms Near-Earth Communications

Viasat Inc, a global leader in satellite communications, has unveiled its HaloNet portfolio—a modular set of advanced communication capabilities designed to transform near-Earth space communications. This innovative system seamlessly integrates space-based and terrestrial networks, providing flexible, multi-orbit network and data services tailored to the specific mission requirements of government and commercial operators.

HaloNet enables simultaneous connectivity to thousands of space vehicles across all orbital inclinations, including challenging polar and retrograde orbits, and functions at any latitude. The platform offers a comprehensive, modular approach combining multi-band GEO-relay and Direct-to-Earth (DTE) satellite communications, addressing critical mission needs like real-time command and control, telemetry, tracking, secure data relay, and launch telemetry without dependence on dedicated ground stations.

Key capabilities and services of HaloNet include:

  1. Telemetry, Tracking, and Command (TT&C) Data Relay Service (DRS) via L-band for secure, low-latency links.
  2. Launch Telemetry DRS for real-time data relay during spacecraft launches.
  3. High-Capacity DRS via Ka-band for on-demand transmission of large volumes of mission data, supporting high-resolution imagery and video.
  4. Direct-to-Earth service through Viasat's extensive Ground Station as a Service (GSaaS) network spanning six continents.
  5. Mobile Command & Control via deployable satellite gateways, enabling secure operations from virtually any location.

By integrating these space and ground capabilities into a unified architecture, HaloNet delivers resilient, secure, and scalable connectivity that meets the expanding communications demands of the LEO and MEO sectors. This enables operators to maintain continuous spacecraft contact, efficiently transport mission-critical data, manage latency, and execute real-time command and control—a crucial advantage given the rapidly growing number of near-Earth missions.

In summary, HaloNet provides a next-generation, modular communication infrastructure that transforms near-Earth communications through flexible multi-orbit networking and data services, designed to cater to evolving government and commercial space mission needs with agility, security, and operational versatility.

Craig Miller, President of Viasat Government, and John Reeves, Vice President of Space and Mission Systems, Viasat Government, have discussed the unified approach of HaloNet to command, control, and data dissemination, as well as its ability to dynamically deliver data based on mission parameters using GEO relay satellites. With HaloNet, Viasat is well-positioned to meet the evolving near-Earth mission communications needs, as well as government customers' capability requirements for critical scientific and defense missions.
