Updated macOS version introduces a new recovery tool
Apple has announced the introduction of a new tool called the Recovery Assistant, designed to help users fix startup issues on their Macs. This feature, which was previously only available on iOS devices, is now part of macOS 26.
The Recovery Assistant works by searching for potential issues and attempting to fix them if found. However, it's important to note that the Recovery Assistant does not have the ability to restore all data. It can only restore iCloud content. For locally stored iCloud content that may be lost, users will receive a notification in the system settings.
To use the Recovery Assistant, users can follow the instructions provided in the notification or manually launch it from the Utilities folder in Recovery Mode. During the recovery process, the Mac may need to be reinstalled or the startup SSD repaired, and iCloud content may be lost.
It's worth mentioning that the Recovery Assistant requires an internet connection and an administrator password to unlock the SSD during the use of the Recovery Assistant. The tool downloads current information and possibly other software from Apple's servers during the recovery process.
While the Recovery Assistant can be a valuable tool, it's not a panacea. It may report that the device has been successfully restored, that it could not be restored, or that no known issues were found. In some cases, the recovery process may not fix all problems that may occur.
Apple has also announced that the Recovery Assistant will be available in future macOS versions, with the next update featuring the Recovery Assistant being named macOS Tahoe. It remains unknown, however, if the Recovery Assistant will come pre-installed in future macOS versions or if it will be a manual installation.
For users who find themselves in a situation where their Mac is not starting up correctly, the Recovery Assistant can be a helpful tool. By providing a straightforward way to fix startup issues and restore iCloud content, the Recovery Assistant is a welcome addition to macOS.
In addition, for those who have lost locally stored iCloud content, a notification will appear in the system settings. This notification serves as a reminder to take necessary steps to recover any lost data.
As always, it's important to back up your data regularly to ensure that you have a copy of your important files should anything happen to your Mac. With the Recovery Assistant now available on Macs, users can rest a bit easier knowing that they have a tool to help them when startup issues arise.
