Unmanned Cargo Aircraft Soaring Through the Skies

Svilen Rangelov sports an impressive beard that he claims is the result of eight years of growth. This beard goes as far back as when he and his sister, an aerospace engineer by profession, co-founded Dronamics, a European company designed to meet the growing demand for freight drones. Rangelov...

Unmanned Cargo Aircraft Soaring Through the Skies

In the world of drone technology, two companies are making waves: Bristow, a renowned US-based helicopter operator, and Elroy Air, a trailblazing firm based in Bulgaria. Bristow has recently expressed an interest in acquiring up to 100 freight drones from Elroy Air.

Elroy Air is developing a large, multi-engined drone named Chapparal, capable of carrying a 225lb (100kg) payload up to 480km (300 miles). This drone operates on a hybrid electric engine, combining a small turbine and electric power, allowing for refueling at existing facilities instead of relying on docking terminals for power.

The prototype cargo plane developed by Elroy Air will be called the Black Swan, a name that reflects the unexpected nature of their innovation. The Black Swan resembles a traditional light airplane but does not have a pilot's cabin, making it a truly autonomous vehicle.

The Black Swan is set to be carbon-neutral, using a new, artificial air travel fuel. This eco-friendly approach aligns with the growing global concern for reducing carbon emissions.

Svilen Rangelov and his younger sibling, Konstantin, founded Dronamics, the company behind the Black Swan. Svilen, with his eight-year-old beard, has a rich background in the autonomous vehicle domain, having worked at Uber's products arm researching autonomous trucks. Kofi Asante, a business development and market expansion executive, has also been involved in pioneering logistics transformation through multimodal autonomous systems.

Dronamics has developed a unique approach to drone distribution, focusing on cargo planes that can land on short paths. This design allows the Black Swan to operate on a mobile phone economy scale, with cheap electronic devices and the ability to land on short paths.

The European aerospace regulatory authority has given Dronamics a limited license to operate, and the brothers agreed to shave their beards only after the first flight of the drone they built. German logistics giant Hellmann is positioning to begin using Dronamics' drones in 2023, marking a significant step forward for the industry.

Elroy Air is in discussions with the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) and plans to conduct a full-sized drone test flight by the end of 2022. The 350kg (770lb) cargo capacity of the Black Swan is equivalent to that of a small courier van, making it a viable solution for many logistics needs.

With Bristow's interest and Hellmann's partnership, the future of freight drones is looking bright. The Black Swan, with its carbon-neutral design and autonomous capabilities, could revolutionise the logistics industry, making deliveries faster, more efficient, and more environmentally friendly.
