Blade didn't turn out to be a colossal failure as I initially thought, given it turned over only one yellow block. There were still 120 possible combinations left—only 120! Props to BLADE, I guess. The word FILMY was less glorious, leaving only five options. But, SILKY saved the day with its singular match in the Wordle—SILLY! Hooray!

Silliness in History

From its Old English roots as "sǣlig," meaning "happy" or "fortunate," to being a playful term for foolishness or silliness by the 16th century, the word "silly" has traversed a winding linguistic journey.

  • Old English and Germanic family: "Sǣlig" was derived from the Proto-Germanic "siliz," meaning fool, simple. The word also shares a Proto-Indo-European root "sel-" with related terms like Old Irish "borb" and Latvian "stulbs," all signifying foolishness or silliness.
  • Middle English and Old French influences: The term underwent influences as it adapted Old French "fol," meaning "madman" or "idiot." From Latin "folus," the word also gained a sense of foolishness.
  • Evolving meanings: Over time, "silly" referred to foolish people, then expanded to cover foolish actions and humorous behaviors. Today, "silly" is still used affectionately to signify playfulness or not-malicious foolishness.

Whether you're here for Wordle's challenge or to indulge in some historical silliness, enjoy your weekend!
