Ultron, portrayed by James Spader, set to return in Marvel's Vision Series sequel.
Get ready, Marvel fans! Terry Matalas, the genius behind Star Trek: Picard, is gearing up for his next big project – an as-yet-untitled Disney+ series focused on everyone's favorite emotionally evolved android, Vision. With Paul Bettany back in action, another AI is joining the cast – none other than the menacing Ultron, played by James Spader.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, this is our first major update since Matalas' involvement was confirmed back in May. Spader's return as the voice of Ultron was inevitable given his previous stint in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Now, Ultron will once again bring chaos, having been the antagonist in that movie – a planetary defense program that turned against its creators, Tony Stark and Bruce Banner, after gaining self-awareness, crafting a body, building an army, and causing mayhem. Remember the creepy Disney-inspired version of "I've Got No Strings" from Pinocchio? Yeah, that was Ultron too.
Vision, on the other hand, was created by Stark's JARVIS AI, a synthezoid body, the Mind Stone, and some of Thor's mojo. Ultron was presumably squashed at the end of Age of Ultron, and Vision wasn't in the best of shapes when we last saw him in WandaVision. So, the circumstances that'll bring these two back together should be quite intriguing. Will they be frenemies? A robotic superteam? Ghosts in the machine causing havoc together? Only time will tell.
As THR notes, the series is set to be the third part of a trilogy that began with WandaVision and continues in Agatha All Along, which is set to debut in September on Disney+. The new show is planning to film in England in early 2025. No word yet on any other casting or creative involvement, including the return of Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda Maximoff, a key figure in Vision's life.
In keeping with Marvel's new strategy to release fewer films and series annually, Vision Quest is expected to premiere on Disney+ in 2026. With Paul Bettany and James Spader on board, this series is already shaping up to be nothing short of epic.
