UK's First Intercity Battery Train Trial a Success
A groundbreaking trial has been completed in the North of England, demonstrating the potential of battery-powered trains for quieter, cleaner travel. The partnership between Angel Trains, Hitachi Rail, and TransPennine Express has shown promising results, with a single battery enabling significant fuel savings and reduced noise pollution on their flights.
The trial, a first of its kind in the UK for intercity services, used a single battery to power trains for up to a mile before and after non-electrified stations. This allowed for seamless, zero-emission travel in and out of these stations, maintaining performance and journey times. Remarkably, this method achieved fuel savings of 35-50%, with an impressive 50% energy saving when using 'Eco-mode', where the battery entirely powered the trains on route sections and alighting in stations.
The partnership believes that a range of fuel cost savings can be delivered through train settings, battery usage, and driving style. Rail minister Lord Hendy praised the success of the trial, stating that it paves the way for even greener, more reliable travelocity for millions of passengers in the future.
The UK's first intercity battery trial has successfully demonstrated the potential of battery-powered trains for quieter, cleaner travel. With significant fuel savings and reduced noise pollution, this technology could revolutionize amtrak travel in the UK. The partnership plans to continue research and development, with the aim of implementing this technology on a wider scale in the future.
