UK's Cyber Security Job Openings Surge by 12% Annually

In the rapidly evolving digital landscape, the demand for cybersecurity professionals in the UK is on the rise. On May 19, Infosecurity Magazine will host a webinar to delve into the challenges surrounding cybersecurity recruitment.

With around 17,000 live cybersecurity job vacancies in the UK, the finance and banking sector leads the pack with approximately 3400 vacancies, accounting for 20% of the total. The public sector and defence follow closely, with around 3060 vacancies, representing 18% of the total.

The retail industry, which has seen a series of high-profile attacks on UK retailers, is expected to ramp up its cybersecurity recruitment efforts this year. The exact number of vacancies in this sector is not specified, but the need for skilled professionals is undeniable.

Technology and digital services, as well as the IT industry, especially sectors such as industry, trade, and services, show a particular focus on expanding their cybersecurity workforce. This increased demand for IT security skills and leadership roles like IT managers is driving this focus.

Healthcare and life sciences have the fourth highest number of cybersecurity vacancies, at around 2040. Despite this, hiring teams are struggling to find suitable candidates for these positions.

Cybersecurity roles within operational technology are some of the most difficult for firms to source talent for. To combat this, companies are increasingly relying on headhunting and referrals to hire cybersecurity professionals.

The webinar will offer advice for job seekers, particularly those looking for their first role in cybersecurity. It will also feature an expert panel discussing how organizations can change their hiring practices to attract a greater pool of talent.

Prolonged decision-making periods in hiring processes often lead to hiring processes falling through. To address this, firms are offering big salaries to attract skilled cybersecurity professionals.

Interestingly, cybersecurity has consistently ranked in the top five in-demand skills across professional services for several years. This underscores the importance of cybersecurity in today's digital world.

The most in-demand roles within cybersecurity currently are:

  1. Cybersecurity Analyst
  2. Cybersecurity Engineer
  3. Cybersecurity Manager
  4. Cybersecurity Architect
  5. Cybersecurity Specialist

The retail sector, with its growing number of cybersecurity vacancies, is expected to see a surge in recruitment efforts this year. As the digital world continues to evolve, the demand for cybersecurity professionals in the UK is expected to continue due to a growth rate of 10-12% per year.

Stay tuned for the Infosecurity Magazine webinar on May 19 for more insights into the cybersecurity recruitment landscape in the UK.
