Ukraine's forthcoming robotic armament is set for deployment
Ukrainian Air Defense Takes a Turn with Automated Shahed Defense System
Ukraine is bracing for an escalation of Russian aerial attacks, with over 350 Shahed drones per night reportedly being deployed, according to sources. In response, the country has unveiled a new air defense system called Sky Sentinel, which is poised to effectively counter these attacks.
With the growing threat of Shahed drones, Ukraine is said to be lacking in air defense systems, especially during the recent nights of heavy bombardment. However, the Sky Sentinel promises to fill this gap. The system resembles a gun turret and is described as affordable and highly accurate. Moreover, it requires minimal human operation.
Colonel Reisner, a military expert, expressed his belief that Russia may increase production of Shahed drones to up to 500 per day. The Sky Sentinel, supported by donations through the Ukrainian government's fundraising platform United24, is projected to cost 1.5 million dollars for ten systems, with each unit valued at 150,000 dollars.
According to the United24 platform, Sky Sentinel can effectively neutralize Shahed drones and even smaller drones and cruise missiles. Initial reports suggest that one of these systems has already successfully shot down four Shahed drones in combat. The AI-powered system is said to require radar synchronization and minimal human intervention for placement in combat positions.
The operational range of the Sky Sentinel remains undisclosed, though it can rotate 360 degrees and is equipped with a machine gun. The system is not solely Ukrainian-made but includes components from foreign sources.
While the number of Sky Sentinels may not be sufficient for comprehensive protection of Ukraine's airspace, experts agree that they would be a valuable addition to the country's current defense arsenal. In addition to Soviet-era systems and modern Western systems that have proven effective against drones, Ukraine still relies on manual methods such as soldiers on pickups shooting at aerial threats. Regardless, with approximately 40 F-16 combat jets delivered from the West, comprehensive airspace protection remains a challenge.
