Ukraine Fortifies Power Grid with US Battery Parks to Defy Russian Attacks
Ukraine has bolstered its power grid resilience with a network of battery parks, a $140 million project completed in August 2025 by American company Fluence. These strategic installations, including one in Kharkiv, support the national grid during Russian missile and drone attacks.
The battery parks, totalling 200 megawatts, can power around 600,000 households for up to two hours. Their modular design allows for easy replacement of damaged units. Six facilities are connected to the national grid, automatically supplying power when other sources go offline. The exact locations and protective measures remain undisclosed for security reasons, as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that further Russian strikes could lead to a blackout in Moscow.
The US-made batteries are designed to 'plug holes and stabilize energy supply' in Ukraine, providing an alternative power source even during grid attacks. This strategic move aims to enhance Ukraine's energy resilience and deter potential Russian aggression against its power infrastructure.
