UK Start-up Viridi Revolutionizes Cleaning with CO2-Based Surfactants

UK-based tech start-up Viridi has made waves in the cleaning industry with its innovative technology. The company has secured significant funding and licensed its rights to major corporations, aiming to revolutionise the production of surfactants using captured carbon dioxide.

Viridi's groundbreaking product, Vireya, is a surface active agent that enables water to effectively lift oils and grime from surfaces in cleaning products. Unlike traditional methods, Vireya is produced using captured CO2 as a feedstock, leading to a substantial reduction in product carbon footprint – up to 70% according to early assessments.

The technology behind Vireya is impressive. It employs a solid, reusable catalyst that converts CO2 into a usable raw material at standard pressures and lower temperatures. This not only reduces the environmental impact but also allows manufacturers to adopt the technology into their existing infrastructure, facilitating a swift transition to more sustainable practices.

Viridi has already licensed its technology to household names such as Unilever and Procter & Gamble. With a £3m seed-funding secured in 2023, the company is well on its way to achieving its target commercial release for 2026.

Viridi's innovative use of captured carbon dioxide in producing cleaning product ingredients is a significant step towards a more sustainable future. By avoiding oil palm-derived feedstocks and reducing carbon footprints, Vireya is set to transform the industry, with major corporations already on board.
