UK Start-up Viridi Launches CO2-Based Cleaning Agent for Quick Decarbonisation

UK-based tech start-up Viridi has launched a game-changing ingredient for cleaning products. Vireya, its innovative surface active agent, uses captured carbon dioxide as a feedstock, marking a significant step towards decarbonisation.

Viridi's technology converts CO2 into a usable raw material using a solid, reusable catalyst. This process can be adopted into existing manufacturing infrastructure, making it an attractive option for companies looking to reduce their carbon footprint quickly. Early assessments indicate a potential 70% reduction in product carbon footprint.

Vireya is set to replace oil palm-derived feedstocks typically used to make ingredients like sodium laureth sulphate (SLS). It enables water molecules to spread evenly, helping them penetrate surfaces and dirt. Its oil-loving tails attach to grease and grime for easy rinsing, making it an effective cleaning agent.

Founded by Dr. Sebastian Gross, Viridi secured £3m in seed-funding in 2023 to accelerate the development and commercialisation of its technology. The company is targeting a commercial release for 2026 after licensing the technology to surfactant manufacturers.
