Trump praises a 'productive' conversation with Xi and announces a planned meeting between the two leaders in November.
In a significant development, US President Donald Trump had a 'very productive call' with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday. The conversation, described as "a very good one," covered several key issues.
The call between the two leaders discussed trade, fentanyl, and the approval of a deal to spin-off the Chinese-owned social media platform TikTok. The TikTok deal, which has been approved, aims to prevent a ban on the popular app in the US. Originally due in December, the ban has been avoided with this deal.
Trump has been attempting to have TikTok sold to an American buyer to allow it to continue operating in the US. The US buyer set to acquire TikTok's US operations, if the mandated sale occurs in December, is a consortium led by tech billionaire Larry Ellison, together with investor Marc Andreessen, Oracle, and Silver Lake.
The topics of fentanyl and trade were also addressed during the call. Fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid, has been a significant concern for both countries. The discussion on trade is expected to shape the economic relationship between the US and China in the coming months.
In addition to the call, Trump confirmed a meeting with Xi Jinping at the APEC Summit in South Korea in November. He also plans to travel to China to meet Xi Jinping "in the early part of next year." The summit between the two leaders in South Korea will be a significant event, providing an opportunity for further discussions on bilateral relations.
Trump made the confirmations about the summit and the topics discussed during the call on his Truth Social platform. He also confirmed that he and Xi Jinping will speak again by phone.
Since taking office, Trump has delayed a ban on TikTok, demonstrating a continued interest in resolving the issue. The conversations between the two leaders are a positive step towards maintaining and improving US-China relations.
