Title: Zuckerberg Strips Back and Challenges Diversity Norms

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, is embracing his true persona, and it seems like users aren't thrilled with the outcome. New reports from the New York Times reveal that Zuckerberg is spearheading a significant shift within Meta, impacting Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. This shift includes abandoning fact-checking, loosening moderation rules, and boosting the algorithm to promote more political content.

A memo obtained by Axios further reveals that Meta will be axing its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) team, halting attempts to work with minority-owned supplier businesses, and discontinuing representation goals. These changes will take effect immediately.

This change in direction appears to stem from Zuckerberg's visit to Mar-a-Lago, where he spent time with President-elect Donald Trump. However, internal sources suggest that Zuckerberg's transformation has been brewing for some time. He has reportedly felt pressured to support "progressive" causes and has been discussing this new approach with tech luminaries such as Marc Andreessen.

Zuckerberg's interpretation of "free speech" is taking an unexpected turn, which appears to be more akin to suppression of marginalized groups than the promotion of open dialogue. Leaked documents reveal that Meta revised content moderation policies, enabling the dissemination of harmful rhetoric, while still prohibiting other speech, such as discussing "white people have mental illness."

Meta claimed that the abolition of DEI programs was due to a shift in the legal and policy landscape. However, internal documents suggest that the primary motivation is Zuckerberg's personal beliefs, which are in line with those in Silicon Valley's venture capital world. They have long criticized DEI programs and consider meritocracy the ultimate route to success, despite studies showing that meritocracy is merely a myth.

The sudden reversal in DEI policies is a significant departure from Meta's previously stated commitments. Just months ago, Meta successfully defended its DEI efforts in court and had publicly pledged its dedication to DEI. Nevertheless, it appears that Zuckerberg is only interested in diversity of thought that aligns with his perspective.

In the forthcoming tech landscape, Meta, under Zuckerberg's leadership, is redefining its approach to content moderation and free speech, prompting controversy among its user base. The New York Times reports that Meta is planning to abolish its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) team, a move that could potentially alienate minority groups and stakeholders who value inclusion.
