TikTok faces another potential walkout notice from Verdi in Berlin. - TikTok faces another potential disruption in Berlin, as Verdi makes a new announcement about a strike.
In a significant development, the German trade union Verdi has announced further strike action against TikTok in Berlin, targeting the social media platform's decisions regarding content moderation and employee dismissals.
The dispute centres around TikTok's plans to automate or outsource content moderation, which has raised concerns among Verdi members. The union argues that if low-paid employees and algorithms are to keep TikTok free of fake news and violence, technological progress is at the expense of employees and the democratic public.
The live department at TikTok, responsible for maintaining relationships with content creators and managing interactions with users who upload videos, is particularly affected. The affected employees in this department work with non-German-speaking content creators, and TikTok's plans involve the dismissal of these employees.
Verdi demands a severance payment of three years' salary for each affected employee. The union is also concerned about the potential loss of jobs at TikTok, and Lucas Krentel of Verdi stated that the dispute is about tech giants taking responsibility for the social consequences of artificial intelligence.
In response to TikTok's plans, Verdi has organised a protest outside the Berlin Labor Court, where the dispute will be heard on the following Thursday. The strike action is in response to TikTok's plans to dismiss employees and is specific to the Berlin branch of TikTok.
Currently, the Human Resources department at TikTok is responsible for creating and implementing compensation plans for affected employees during the planned layoffs. However, Verdi believes that TikTok cannot simply proceed with its plans due to the fundamental issues at stake.
As the situation unfolds, it is clear that Verdi is determined to hold TikTok accountable for its decisions, and the social media giant will need to address these concerns to ensure a resolution is reached.
