The Good Rice Alliance has given 'Ae' a high pre-evaluation ranking, as recognized by BeZero Carbon.

In a significant stride towards sustainable agriculture and climate action, The Good Rice Alliance (TGRA) has received an 'Ae' rating from BeZero Carbon, a leading independent carbon ratings agency. This top quartile score reflects a high standalone carbon rating combined with a very high likelihood of successful project execution.

Based in India, TGRA is a partnership between Bayer, GenZero, Shell Energy India, Mitsubishi, and other entities, focused on advancing sustainable rice farming to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The alliance works with smallholder farmers to implement climate-smart agricultural practices such as Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) and Direct Seeded Rice (DSR), which significantly lower methane emissions, a potent GHG, associated with rice cultivation.

As of October 2024, TGRA has enrolled over 12,000 farmers across thirteen Indian states, covering around 35,000 hectares of farmland. This has led to a reduction of methane emissions equivalent to nearly 120,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. Rice fields typically contribute about 10% of global methane emissions, so TGRA's focus on sustainable practices directly mitigates a major source of climate pollution while supporting smallholder livelihoods.

The 'Ae' rating confirms a high likelihood that each TGRA credit will deliver one ton of CO2e avoidance. BeZero's ratings are based on a rigorous analysis of additionality, carbon accounting, and permanence risks. The Carbon ex ante of 'a' for TGRA is comparable to the highest rated Soil Carbon & Agriculture credits.

Moreover, TGRA's climate-smart practices can reduce water consumption by up to 30% without impacting yields. This equates to over 12,50,000 million litres of water savings across 35,000 hectares per season in total, the equivalent of 330 billion US gallons.

TGRA is closely aligned with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and plans to work together with smallholder farmers from the grassroots to drive maximum co-benefits and mitigate climate change. The initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to foster environmental and socioeconomic benefits.

BeZero Carbon, with a 180+ team of climate scientists, geospatial experts, data scientists, financial analysts, and policy specialists, provides the rigorous analysis required for TGRA's carbon rating. The Good Rice Alliance exemplifies how agribusiness, investment platforms, and energy companies can jointly drive climate action and sustainable rural development through innovative, science-based farming solutions.
