Thai and Cambodian countries face a high volume of cyber assaults
In a recent report by the cybersecurity surveillance platform, Personar, it has been revealed that Thailand and Cambodia have been hit by a significant number of system breaches due to cyberattacks. However, the report highlights a concerning disparity between the two countries, with Thailand experiencing a more diverse range and larger number of attacks.
According to the report, Thailand has faced 438 system breaches, a figure that is higher than the confirmed 500 system breaches in Cambodia. The report attributes this difference to Thailand's greater technological integration, stronger international defense collaborations, and more extensive digital infrastructure presence, which creates a broader and more varied attack surface.
On the other hand, Cambodia's lower cyber capability and less advanced infrastructure result in fewer types of cyberattacks targeting it. The report also suggests that the true number of attacks in both countries could be higher than the confirmed figures, as it implies that the number of confirmed attacks may not accurately represent the full extent of cyberattacks during the specified time period, May 1 to July 31.
The report further reveals that Thailand has been targeted by 59 different hacker groups, a significantly higher number compared to the 20 hacker groups that have targeted Cambodia during the same time period. This technological edge and integration expose Thailand to a wider spectrum of cyber threats, as it is more connected and reliant on digital and networked systems.
The report also sheds light on the disproportionate impact of cyberattacks on Thailand and Cambodia. While direct data on the Personar report is not readily available, this context from recent analyses and geopolitical assessments explains why Thailand faces a greater diversity of cyberattacks than Cambodia. The lack of advanced cyber activities or electronic warfare from Cambodia’s side and Thailand’s integration into global networks naturally results in more varied cyber threats against Thailand.
Thailand's political prominence and larger economy also increase its attractiveness for diverse threat actors, making it a prime target for cyberattacks. In contrast, Cambodia, with its less advanced infrastructure and lower cyber capability, is less of a draw for these malicious actors.
The report concludes by emphasising the need for both countries to strengthen their cybersecurity measures to protect their digital assets and infrastructure from these growing threats. As the world becomes increasingly digital, it is crucial for nations to be vigilant and proactive in safeguarding their cybersecurity.

- Even though Cambodia's lower tech integration and less advanced infrastructure result in fewer types of cyberattacks, the report suggests that the actual number of attacks in both countries might be higher due to underreporting.
- The large number of hacker groups targeting Thailand (59), compared to Cambodia (20), indicates a higher technological edge and integration for Thailand, making it more vulnerable to a wider range of cybersecurity threats.
