Tesla's Model Y Standard: Affordable Compact SUV Coming Soon
Tesla has announced the Model Y Standard, a more affordable version of its compact SUV, set to launch soon. This China-exclusive, long-wheelbase model will feature a closed glass roof and a simplified interior.
The Model Y Standard was first introduced in China as the 'Model Y L' in August 2025. It will undercut the Model Y Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive by $5,000, starting at $39,990. The cheaper model will offer 75 cu. ft. of cargo space, slightly less than the Long Range model.
The interior will have a simpler layout with textile decor, a manual steering wheel, and manual second-row air vents. It will feature a 15.4-inch center display but lack a second-row touchscreen and HEPA filter. Externally, it will sport a redesigned front fascia, front bumper camera, and no light bar across the front.
Recently, a camouflaged prototype of the cheaper Model Y was spotted testing on the streets of Palo Alto, California. Real-world validation testing indicates its launch is imminent. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has confirmed that production of the cheaper Model Y has already begun.
The Model Y Standard, with its closed glass roof and simplified interior, is set to provide an affordable option for Tesla enthusiasts. Its launch is expected soon, following successful testing and production commencement.
