Tesla Model Y Hits Indian Roads: Supercharger Stations Roll Out Across the Country
Tesla, the renowned electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, is making its mark in India with the launch of its second experience center in Delhi and the installation of Supercharger stations in various cities.
The Tesla Model Y, the latest addition to Tesla's lineup, comes equipped with a built-in navigation system that guides users to the nearest Supercharging station[3]. Tesla has announced plans to install Supercharger stations in Aerocity, Noida, and Gurugram, and by September, new stations will be operational in Lower Parel, Thane, and Navi Mumbai[6][7].
The Supercharger stations offer a fast-charging solution for Tesla vehicles, with the Model Y Standard variant capable of juicing up its battery to cover 267 km of range in just 15 minutes[10]. The charging speed, however, can vary due to factors such as the battery's current state of charge and temperature[9].
The cost of charging a Tesla Model Y at a Supercharger station in India varies depending on the model type. The Supercharger tariff is set at ₹24 per kWh, and the full charge cost for the Model Y Standard variant is approximately ₹1,800[1][5]. Other estimates suggest that the cost for the base variant could be lower, around ₹1,200 to ₹1,400[4]. For the Long Range variant, the cost is expected to be over ₹2,000[1]. These estimates are based on the Tesla Model Y's battery size, which for the Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) model is about 62.5 kWh, resulting in a charge cost of around ₹1,500 at a Supercharger[2].
Tesla's Superchargers boast a 99.95% uptime, ensuring a working charging solution no matter the time of the day[8]. The payment process for Tesla chargers will be available on the Tesla app on your smartphone, making the charging process seamless and convenient.
In the competitive EV market in India, the Tesla Model Y faces competition from other high-end EVs such as the Volvo C40 Recharge, Kia EV6, and MG M9 EV. The Volvo C40 Recharge 78 kWh variant, for instance, has a range of 530 km and is priced at ₹ 62.95 Lakhs[11]. The Kia EV6 84 kWh variant offers a range of 663 km and is priced at ₹ 65.97 Lakhs, while the MG M9 EV 90 kWh variant provides a range of 548 km and is priced at ₹ 69.90 Lakhs[12].
As Tesla continues to expand its presence in India, the future of electric mobility in the country looks promising. The launch of the Tesla Model Y and the installation of Supercharger stations mark a significant step towards a sustainable and electric future for India.
