**Tesla Officially Launches in India, Marking a Major Milestone**

After years of anticipation and negotiations, Tesla, the world-renowned electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, made its official entry into the Indian market on July 15, 2025. The first showroom, located in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), marked the beginning of Tesla's journey in the world's third-largest automotive market [1][2][4].

The initial offerings from Tesla in India are the Model Y and the Model 3. The Model Y SUV is expected to be the first model on sale, with six units shipped from Tesla's Shanghai plant to Mumbai for display and demonstration purposes [1][2]. Tesla has also opened orders for the Model Y, quoting deliveries starting in Q3 2025 [3].

The pricing of the Model Y in India reflects the high import duties of up to 70% on fully built vehicles, which Tesla is currently subject to since it is entering the market through imports without local manufacturing [3]. The Model Y RWD is launched at approximately ₹61.07 lakh (around $71,000 USD), and the Model Y Long Range is priced at around ₹69.15 lakh (about $80,000 USD) [3].

Unlike many other brands, Tesla's Indian operations will be a company-operated 3S dealership model (sales, service, and spares) [1]. The Mumbai showroom serves not only as a retail outlet but also as an experience center, where customers can test drive, customize, and place orders for Tesla vehicles [2]. Tesla plans to expand its presence with more showrooms in major cities such as Delhi and Bengaluru in the near future [1][2].

Tesla's entry into India follows prolonged discussions and negotiations with the Indian government, who offered tax concessions contingent on Tesla investing $500 million and setting up manufacturing within three years [1]. However, Tesla opted to launch via imports initially, affecting the pricing structure with high tariffs, which could limit mass-market adoption until local production is established [3].

The permit for Tesla's operations in India is valid for five years and allows Tesla to operate in India without any restrictions specified [4]. Tesla India Motors and Energy Pvt Ltd, the company's Indian subsidiary, has obtained final approval from the Maharashtra Regional Transport Office (RTO) [4]. The permit allows Tesla to operate showrooms, carry out road trials, transport unregistered vehicles, and ultimately sell cars in India [4].

Customers who purchase a Tesla vehicle through a referral link are eligible for three months of Full Self-Driving (FSD) [5]. Tesla's focus at the outset will be on running showrooms rather than local production [1]. The special event at the Mumbai showroom will mark the official start of Tesla's operations in India, signifying a significant step in the global expansion of the electric vehicle market.
