Tesla Begins Early Access for Supervised FSD (Full Self-Driving) Initiative
Tesla is set to launch a significant update for its Full Self-Driving (FSD) Supervised Early Access Program, with version 14 (v14) expected within approximately six weeks from early August 2025. This update will feature a new model with approximately 10 times more parameters, aiming to improve safety and video compression loss. However, v14 will still be a supervised system requiring active driver attention [3][4].
The FSD Supervised Early Access Program is an extension of Tesla's Full Self-Driving initiative, aimed at gathering real-world feedback from selected Tesla owners. The program is currently open to those who own Hardware 4 vehicles [1][3][4]. To enroll, a banner in the Tesla app is appearing for some owners, offering the option to "Enroll in FSD (Supervised) Early Access Program."
As part of the program, detailed vehicle data, including GPS, camera footage, and VIN-linked information, will be collected [2]. Participants will have access to early features for testing and will provide feedback to Tesla for the ongoing development of FSD. Enrolling in the program initiates a request that may take up to 10 minutes to process [2].
Tesla is also making progress towards an Unsupervised FSD rollout, which would allow fully autonomous driving without human supervision. This feature is expected to be launched in select U.S. cities by late 2025, with newer Hardware 4 vehicles. However, full unsupervised capabilities that need no human intervention may not be ready until around 2027 according to Elon Musk [2][4].
Independent testing shows that Tesla’s supervised FSD system has achieved milestone drives, such as a 362-mile supervised trip from San Francisco to Los Angeles without intervention, highlighting progress in real-world performance [5]. Tesla emphasizes that the supervised system requires driver engagement for safety and considers this an advancement over traditional driving aids [5].
Regulatory and safety context still pose challenges for unsupervised operation, with Tesla advancing neural network improvements and data collection to prepare [2][4]. Thus, Tesla’s FSD program is expanding cautiously, with significant updates enhancing the supervised experience now and plans for unsupervised driving in the near future but not imminently widespread [1][3][4].

The FSD program expansion by Tesla is not just limited to the v14 update; it also includes plans for an unsupervised rollout of FSD, a significant step towards autonomous driving in the automotive industry. This move could potentially disrupt the transportation sector, especially finance, as it might lead to a shift in investment and research strategies within the technology sector.
