Telecommunications companies Maroc Telecom and Inwi collaborate for speedier deployment of fiber optics and 5G networks in Morocco
In a significant move for Morocco's telecommunications sector, Maroc Telecom and Inwi have put aside their legal differences and forged a new partnership aimed at accelerating the deployment of fibre-optic and 5G technologies across the country.
The legal dispute between the two leading telecom operators, which centered around alleged fair competition violations, was settled in 2025. As part of the resolution, Maroc Telecom agreed to pay Inwi MAD 4.38 billion (approximately US$455 million). This resolution paved the way for a more cooperative relationship, as evidenced by the new partnership.
The expanded partnership involves the creation of two joint ventures: FiberCo and TowerCo. FiberCo's mission is to expand fibre-optic networks, with a goal to reach 1 million connections within two years and 3 million connections within five years. The first phase of the project, valued at MAD 4.4 billion (around US$457 million) over the next three years, is pending approval by Morocco's National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT). The partnership does not specify the total investment for this project.
TowerCo's mission is to build 2,000 new telecom towers in the next three years and 6,000 new towers within ten years to support 5G rollout. The joint ventures aim to pool resources and avoid duplicate infrastructure, speeding up network deployment and improving coverage.
The resolution of the legal dispute and the subsequent partnership are seen as pivotal for Morocco’s telecom sector. They are expected to facilitate improved digital infrastructure and support the country’s ambitions for broader technological inclusion and service quality enhancements in fiber-optic broadband and 5G mobile networks.
The agreement is also expected to strengthen the competitive positioning and technological modernization of Morocco’s telecom market. Jassem Alzaabi, Chairman of e& (the parent company of Maroc Telecom), endorses the partnership as a significant step toward greater market stability and Morocco's position as an attractive destination for investment in the telecommunications sector.
This development marks a major step in cooperation between the two leading telecom operators, ending prior legal contention and fostering greater collaboration in Morocco’s telecommunications future. The legal and corporate advisory provided by prominent Moroccan law firms Bennani & Associés and Naciri & Associés played key roles in facilitating this alliance.
