In a bold move, Tecno has announced the Phantom Ultimate G Fold, a concept phone that promises to revolutionise the tri-fold smartphone market. The device was recently tested during a photo walk with UK Black Female Photographers (UKBFTOG) in Camden, showcasing its potential.

The Phantom Ultimate G Fold boasts a unique tri-fold design, folding inwards twice in a "G-style" manner. This innovative approach provides superior protection for the delicate main flexible display when the device is closed, unlike some competitors that fold outward and leave the screen partially exposed.

One of the standout features of the Phantom Ultimate G Fold is its slim profile. Tecno claims it will be the thinnest tri-fold phone globally, potentially slimmer than Huawei's Mate XT Ultimate, which unfolds to just 3.6mm thickness, and possibly matching or better than the earlier Tecno Phantom Ultimate 2 concept at 11mm folded thickness. Early reports estimate the folded thickness around 13mm, similar to Huawei Mate XT's 12.8mm folded thickness.

The device sports a large, seamless, and perfectly flat inner display when fully unfolded, made possible by smaller dual hinges and a special layering of flexible screen materials. Additionally, a cover screen on the left side acts as a secondary display for quick, classic smartphone tasks without unfolding the phone.

The hinge design supports stable hovering angles and various shapes, allowing laptop-like usage modes that enhance productivity and viewing options. However, the detailed specifications such as screen size, chipset, and pricing have not yet been officially revealed. These details are expected at the formal announcement planned for mid-July 2025.

The Phantom Ultimate G Fold also features a triple-camera setup, though exact camera details have not been disclosed yet. A comparison with other tri-fold devices reveals that the Phantom Ultimate G Fold stands out for its dual-inward fold and very slim profile for such complexity.

Samsung is expected to launch a tri-fold device, but the release date is not specified. The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate, released last year, has a folded thickness of 12.8mm. Tecno's concept phone, the Phantom Ultimate 2, was revealed last August and had a folded thickness of 11mm.

The Phantom Ultimate G Fold represents a strong, innovative contender in the tri-fold phone market with a focus on protection, slimness, and flexible usability. While Samsung’s and Huawei’s devices are well-known players in the tri-fold space, Tecno’s Phantom Ultimate G Fold stands out for its dual-inward fold and very slim profile for such complexity, though the actual final product and full specs are still awaited. Full details and pricing are pending its official mid-July unveiling later this month.

The Phantom Ultimate G Fold, with its unique tri-fold design and slim profile, could challenge the thinnest tri-fold phone title currently held by Huawei's Mate XT Ultimate. This Tecno concept phone also boasts a cover screen for quick tasks, smaller dual hinges for a seamless inner display, and a triple-camera setup that sets it apart from other tri-fold devices. Despite strong competition from Samsung and Huawei, the Phantom Ultimate G Fold’s dual-inward fold and slimness make it a standout competitor in the tri-fold phone market.
