Technical Centre of Lardy is transitioning towards complete reliance on electricity, driven by SERMA.
Renault Group and SERMA Partner to Transform Lardy Technical Center into Electric Vehicle Test Hub
The Renault Group has announced a strategic partnership with SERMA to anchor electric vehicle development and testing in France. This collaboration will see the Lardy Technical Center, located near Paris, repurpose previously dedicated spaces for thermal engine validation towards a 100% electric future.
The first phase of this transformation will involve the implantation of the Battery Cell Research Laboratory in October 2022. This new laboratory will pave the way for SERMA to conduct abusive tests on batteries, pushing their limits beyond standard specifications under extreme conditions.
In early 2025, SERMA is expected to commence tests at the Lardy site, which will include electrical tests on energy storage systems, cycling benches, and climatic chambers. Power electronics tests on chargers, converters, and inverters will also be conducted at the site.
The partnership will enable Stellantis to conduct electric tests at the Renault Technical Center in Lardy, enhancing overall engineering performance, particularly in terms of reactivity. The Lardy site will provide SERMA with state-of-the-art facilities for electrical tests, including various types of abusive tests.
Event generation for extreme scenarios that could lead to failures or incidents will be part of the abusive tests at the Lardy site. The tests will also involve electric motor tests for the characterization of electric motor technologies.
SERMA will fund the realization of the electrical testing means as part of the partnership, while Renault Group will fund the building's transformation in accordance with the partnership terms. This partnership will provide Ampere, a new entity dedicated to electric vehicles, with the necessary testing capacity for Renault's vehicle range.
The transformation of the Lardy Technical Center into a hub for electric vehicle development and testing will turn the Essonne Technical Center into a key link in the electric vehicle value chain. This collaboration between Renault Group and SERMA is a significant step towards a sustainable and electric future for the automotive industry in France.
