Tanzania's Minister Chairs Zanzibar Meeting on Digital Access to Justice

The United Republic of Tanzania's Minister of Constitutional and Legal Affairs, Honourable Dr Pindi H. Chana, chaired a significant meeting in Zanzibar on 4 March 2024. The event, titled 'Technology and Innovation: How digitalisation paves the way for the development of people-centred access to justice', brought together law ministers, attorneys-general, and international journalists to discuss recent legal developments and emerging justice issues.

The meeting, hosted by the Tanzanian government, explored responsible ways to utilise technology to enhance law and access to justice, particularly for marginalised communities. It aligned with mandates from Commonwealth Heads of Government Meetings, including the Declaration on Equal Access to Justice, and contributed to Sustainable Development Goal target 16.3.

The agenda covered a wide range of topics, including digital assets, electronic resources for efficient legal systems, protection of women and girls, access to justice for people with disabilities, and climate policy developments. The inaugural Commonwealth Access to Justice Prize winners were also announced, recognising innovative initiatives promoting access to justice at local or national levels. A high-level side event, in partnership with Barefoot Law, showcased the Mama Samia Legal Aid Initiative, promoting effective and inclusive access to justice in Tanzania.

The Senior Officials Meeting, chaired by Dr Chana, successfully advanced discussions on leveraging technology to improve law and access to justice. The outcomes from the meeting are expected to inform policy decisions and initiatives aimed at enhancing equal access to justice for all citizens, in line with the Commonwealth's commitments and global development goals.
