Taipei City climbs five spots to earn the 60th rank in the 'Global Cities Index.'
Hittin' the Big Leagues: Taipei's Surge in Oxford Economics' Global City Rankings
Once again, Taipei has made a splash, climbing up five spots in the prestigious Oxford Economics' Global Cities Index 2025, landing at an impressive rank of 60.
This annual evaluation, published not long ago, analyzed a whopping 1,000 metropolises based on five key indices: economics, human capital, quality of life, environment, and governance.
New York remains the big kahuna, hanging onto its top spot due to the sheer might of its financial sector and economic stability. But Taipei gave it a run for its money, showing significant improvement in certain categories.
The City of Taipei's economic performance placed it at rank 263, a tad behind powerhouses like New York, which snatched the number one spot in the economics index. However, in the human capital category, Taipei shone bright, ranking 44th, demonstrating a robust workforce or education system that contributes positively to its overall ranking.
Taipei truly excelled in the quality of life category, coming in at a commendable 15th place. This suggests that the city offers an appealing standard of living and livability, even surpassing New York, which ranked a relatively disappointing 90th in this category.
When it comes to the environment, the city could use a little TLC, ranking 284th. And while governance is a relative strength for Taipei, compared to some other major cities, it still had some work to do, falling short of New York's poor governance ranking of 161.
Joining Taipei in the ranks are five other Taiwanese cities: Hsinchu (201st), Taichung (223rd), Kaohsiung (231st), Tainan (270th), and Chiayi (377th).
Chart-toppers after New York include London, Paris, San Jose (California), Seattle, Melbourne, Sydney, Boston, Tokyo, and San Francisco. Additional Asian cities making the top 100 are Seoul (15th), Singapore (21st), Hong Kong (72nd), Kuala Lumpur (79th), and Osaka-Kyoto (100th).
Notably, the majority of cities in the top 100 hail from North American and West European nations. This speaks to the index's prioritization of economic scale, knowledge, technical capabilities, and manufacturing output.

It's likely Taipei's advancements in quality of life and governance that played a key role in its improved ranking, but there's still room for growth, particularly in the areas of economics and environmental management. So keep your eyes on Taipei, folks; this city's got next!
- Taipei's advancements in the areas of quality of life and governance have led it to be considered a promising contender in the global business industry, as evidenced by its improved ranking in Oxford Economics' Global Cities Index 2025.
- As education and self-development are crucial components in the business world, Taipei's robust workforce, demonstrated by its 44th ranking in the human capital category, is indicative of its potential for growth and prosperity in various industries.
- In the realm of technology, which often plays a significant role in finance and lifestyle, Taipei could further enhance its position by focusing on improving its economy and environmental management, as these factors were areas where it underperformed compared to other major cities in the index.
