Swiss Army Boosts Drone Defense Amid Rising Sightings Near Zurich Airport
Switzerland's Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) introduced mini-dronepads for experimental use in 2019. Now, the Swiss Army is stepping up its response to increasing drone wars, particularly near Zurich Airport, by procuring new drone defense systems.
The Federal Office for Equipment has been tasked with acquiring these systems, which are expected to bolster the protection of troops and infrastructure. The move comes in response to a rise in drone sightings across Europe, with Zurich Airport experiencing delays and closures due to unauthorised drone flights.
The army aims to select suitable types for introduction swiftly. A unit has already tested a defense system in a field trial last summer, demonstrating the systems' partial mobility and potential for assisting civilian authorities or peace promotion services.
The Swiss Army's procurement of drone defense systems underscores the growing concern over unauthorised drone flights, particularly near airports. Anyone flying a drone at or near Zurich Airport without permission can face criminal charges. The selected systems are expected to enhance the army's capabilities and contribute to broader security efforts.
