Swindlers on the internet successfully extracted approximately 1.5 billion rubles from residents of Yakutia in the year 2023.

In Yakutia, a roundtable was organised by the acting prosecutor, Sergey Gubin, with the aim of protecting citizens' rights from crimes committed using information and communication technologies. The event was attended by heads and representatives of interested ministries and departments, law enforcement agencies, banks, the public, and mass media.

The main group of victims are working-age individuals with a stable income, aged 30 to 49, accounting for 42.8% of the cases. Surprisingly, 18.7% of the victims are people aged 60 and above. In 2022-2023, the total damage caused to the republic's residents by the criminal actions of internet scammers amounted to around 1.5 billion rubles.

During the roundtable, examples of criminal cases and video materials were presented, highlighting fraud schemes involving fake calls from FSB, MVD, and Central Bank officials. These schemes included the alleged danger to victims' funds, the opening of credit cards in their names, conducting a "special operation," and demands for fund transfers to "safe" accounts. Promises of earnings on investments and cryptocurrency were also part of these fraudulent activities.

In an effort to combat these crimes, proposals were made to strengthen preventive work, increase information openness, and involve banks in identifying victims of scams when granting loans. It was also suggested to conduct preventive measures in enterprises and organisations. All proposals made during the roundtable will be considered in the further work of the prosecutor's office of Yakutia in cooperation with involved ministries and departments.

The chairman of the Roundtable for the Protection of Civil Rights against Cybercrime in Yakutia, led by Sergei Gubin, is Sergei Gubin himself. The press service of the prosecutor's office of the republic reported on the roundtable and its outcomes.

It is concerning to note that from 2018 to 2023, the number of such crimes in Yakutia has increased by 317%. In 2023 alone, more than 2,900 people fell victim to such crimes. The roundtable was a significant step towards addressing this issue and ensuring the safety of Yakutia's residents in the digital age.
