Blue Origin's NS-31 mission marked a significant milestone in the commercial space sector, as it embarked on a suborbital journey with an all-female crew. This historic flight, reminiscent of the 1963 Vostok 6 mission that carried the first woman in space, Valentina Tereshkova, symbolised Blue Origin’s commitment to inclusivity and the advancement of space tourism.

The six-person crew for NS-31 was a diverse group, comprising journalist Lauren Sánchez, NASA aerospace engineer Aisha Bowe, pop singer Katy Perry, film producer Kerianne Flynn, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, and journalist Gayle King. Two of the passengers made history: Nguyen was the first woman of Vietnamese descent, and Bowe was the first Bahamian person in space.

The NS-31 mission lasted approximately 10 minutes and 21 seconds, crossing the Kármán line—the recognised boundary of space—and offering its crew a brief but transformative experience of weightlessness and a stunning view of Earth from space. The flight demonstrated Blue Origin’s capability in safe, repeatable suborbital tourism flights.

The mission held symbolic and cultural significance, highlighting women’s roles in space and innovation. The crew members wore space suits designed by a fashion house associated with Oscar de la Renta, and the high-profile passenger list included celebrities and advocates. The inclusion of public figures like Katy Perry singing in space during flight had both symbolic and media impact.

Blue Origin's ambition extends beyond suborbital tourism. The company is focused on building infrastructure for millions to live and work in space, starting with suborbital tourism flights to refine reusable rocket technology for future orbital missions and space habitats. Jeff Bezos, the founder of Blue Origin, has framed these missions as practice for routine spaceflight, with New Shepard serving as a stepping stone towards ambitious projects like the New Glenn orbital rocket and the Orbital Reef space station.

The NS-31 mission underscored Blue Origin’s progress in making human suborbital spaceflight a viable commercial experience, with growing inclusivity and appeal to private citizens from diverse professions beyond traditional astronauts.
