Strategies for Post-Support Windows 10 Phase
On July 16th, Jörg Thatje, the representative for Digital Participation of the Digital Hub Oldenburg, delivered a timely presentation at the Lensahn community library. The event, which began at 7 pm, aimed to address the critical risks users face as Microsoft ends support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025.
During the 90-minute session, Jörg Thatje highlighted the significant security vulnerabilities that will arise after October 2025 when Windows 10 will no longer receive security updates, bug fixes, or technical support. Without these updates, devices are at increased risk of malware, ransomware, data breaches, and other cyber threats.
The most prominent risks include exposure to unpatched security vulnerabilities, lack of software and feature updates, no technical support from Microsoft, challenges in maintaining compliance with industry regulations, and potential incompatibility with newer applications and software tools.
Jörg Thatje emphasised the importance of transitioning to a supported operating system to mitigate these risks. The primary alternative is upgrading to Windows 11, which continues to receive security and feature updates and technical support. Other alternatives or strategies include participating in the Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, considering cloud-based solutions such as Windows 365, and planning phased upgrades.
Admission to the event was free, and participants could expect an informative and lively event with practical examples. Registration was required, and interested individuals could register by phone at 04363/50825 or by email at [email protected]. Drinks were provided during the event.
Turit Flohr, head of the library, expressed her pleasure at having Jörg Thatje as a speaker due to his ability to explain complex digital topics clearly. Questions were explicitly welcome and will be answered in detail.
This event was particularly relevant to the Ostholstein region, as Microsoft's decision to end support for Windows 10 will affect millions of computers worldwide, including those in Ostholstein. Jörg Thatje's presentation provided valuable information and recommendations for a smooth and secure transition.
