PlayStation 6 prediction from ex-Sony executive: Is investing in a PlayStation 5 still a viable option in the year 2025?

Sony's ex-executive shares PlayStation 6 speculations - Is it financially sensible to purchase a PlayStation 5 in 2025?

In an interview with GamesBeat, Shuhei Yoshida, the 38-year veteran of Sony and former President of SIE Worldwide Studios, has shared insights about the potential release date of the PlayStation 6. Yoshida, who spent 31 years working on PlayStation projects, starting from the original PlayStation launch in 1993, believes that the next-generation console might be released in 2028.

The prediction aligns with the trend of increasing gaps between console generations. The PlayStation 4 launched in 2013, the PS5 came seven years later in 2020, and the PS6 following around 2028 fits this evolving timeline. However, Yoshida has noted he does not have insider information on the exact release date, only offering a reasoned estimate based on industry patterns and experience.

According to Yoshida, the PS5 generation was slowed down due to manufacturing issues, such as pandemic-related chip shortages. This delay in the release of the PlayStation 6 might be a response to those challenges.

In the meantime, Sony continues to release a lineup of exciting games for the PlayStation 5. Upcoming PlayStation-exclusive titles like Death Stranding 2, Marvel's Wolverine, Ghost of Yotei, and Naughty Dog's Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet are still scheduled for the PlayStation 5. Additionally, former Xbox exclusive games like Forza Horizon 5 and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle are also coming to the PlayStation 5.

Meanwhile, Xbox CEO Phil Spencer hinted at a shift in the company's perspective on how its games will be made available in the future, focusing on allowing more people to play. This could potentially change the competitive landscape between Sony and Microsoft, as the 10th generation of console gaming may have a different feel due to Xbox seemingly pulling back from the rivalry with PlayStation.

As for the PlayStation 6, it is expected to use advanced hardware, including an AMD Orion Zen 6 CPU and an RDNA 5 (UDNA) GPU. With Yoshida's prediction, the PS6 could potentially make it Sony's longest-serving flagship console, extending its lifespan beyond the current seven-year console cycle.
