SMA America Returns Inverter Production to U.S. with Create Energy Partnership
SMA America is returning inverter production to the U.S., partnering with Create Energy in Tennessee. The two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding to boost localized clean energy solutions for the U.S. market.
Production is set to commence in early 2024, initially targeting 3.5 GW per year. SMA will manufacture its Sunny Highpower PEAK3 inverters and the new fully-integrated PowerSkid inverters at Create Energy's Tennessee facility. The production size may increase in the future.
SMA is considering developing inverters for the 2000 V transition but is adopting a cautious approach. The inverters produced in Tennessee will be U.S.-based, though some components may be sourced from Germany. SMA previously produced inverters in Denver until 2016, when it moved production overseas due to pricing pressures. This time, SMA will serve as the designer, with Create Energy acting as the manufacturer.
Manufacturing is expected to begin in Q1 2026. SMA currently has two U.S. partners for domestic integration of its legacy medium power station inverters. The new partnership with Create Energy is expected to strengthen SMA's presence in the U.S. solar market.
