Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7 model will feature Qi2.1 technology, yet users shouldn't let their anticipation run too high
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 is set to join the foldable smartphone market, and while it supports Qi2 wireless charging at 15W, it falls short of fully implementing the Qi2 standard's magnetic attachment features.
According to the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) database, the Galaxy Z Fold 7's model number is SM-D637U. The device is listed as only supporting the Baseline Power Profile, as it lacks built-in magnets for magnetic alignment. This means the phone is "Qi2 Ready" but does not fully comply with the Qi2 standard's magnetic attachment features.
To experience the full magnetic alignment with Qi2 accessories, such as snap-on chargers, users will need a compatible case with magnets. This limitation results in the phone adhering only to the baseline Qi2 profile without the enhanced "snap-on" magnetic coupling.
Samsung appears to require external magnetic support via cases/accessories for full Qi2 magnetic features. This design decision is likely related to preserving other hardware functions, such as the S Pen mechanism, or maintaining the ultra-thin foldable design.
Interestingly, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is expected to support Qi2.1 charging, similar to its predecessor. However, the power profile listing for the Galaxy Z Fold 7 may be a placeholder, subject to change before the device's official release.
It's worth noting that the WPC has introduced a new Qi2 Ready certification for devices that support the full technology of Qi2 or Qi2.1, but do not include hardware magnets for perfect alignment and accessory support. This certification seems to align with the Galaxy Z Fold 7's listing in the WPC database.
In the past, Samsung has used different model numbers for pre-release products in the WPC database. For instance, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 entered with a unique SC-55E model number. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 received Qi certification under the model number SM-D617D.
