Russia's Ambitious Plan: In-Flight Internet by 2028

Russia is pushing ahead with plans to bring internet connectivity to its aircraft. The national project 'Economy of Data and Digital Transformation of the State' has allocated nearly 107 billion rubles for mass production of spacecraft to facilitate this. Meanwhile, technical requirements for in-flight internet have been established in collaboration with 'Aeroflot', with the final cost for passengers still under calculation.

The CEO of the company has confirmed that in-flight internet is indeed on the horizon. However, the process is complex and requires more time than ground-based internet due to stringent safety and certification requirements. The solution lies in a satellite constellation, which is expected to be fully deployed by 2027. This constellation will enable global coverage and high-speed data transmission, ensuring passengers can stay connected even at 30,000 feet.

Expanding this orbital constellation is a top priority, and mass production of spacecraft is crucial for this. Public Wi-Fi on board Russian aircraft is expected to become available from 2028, following the launch of the satellite constellation. By 2030, all Russian aircraft are planned to be fully equipped with in-flight internet.

With the significant investment and clear roadmap, Russia is committed to bringing in-flight internet to its aircraft. The satellite constellation, set to be fully operational by 2027, promises global coverage and high-speed data transmission, transforming the flying experience for passengers.
