Rumor suggests that the 2026 MacBook Pro is on Apple's radar, with plans to incorporate on-cell touch technology into its OLED screen for the first time.
Apple is gearing up for some exciting changes in its MacBook lineup, according to recent leaks and predictions from industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
Kuo, known for his solid track record in predicting Apple product developments, suggests that we might see MacBook Pro models with OLED displays as early as 2026. This shift in display technology could mark a significant change in Mac design philosophy, moving away from the current Liquid Retina XDR display that offers 120Hz refresh rates.
Samsung Display is rumoured to be Apple's exclusive partner for providing OLED touchscreen panels for the first MacBook Pro with OLED touchscreen technology. If production goes as planned, we could see these devices enter the market in late 2026, with an initial production volume of 2-3 million units annually, potentially expanding to 10 million.
In addition to the OLED MacBook Pro, Kuo also hints at the development of a more affordable MacBook, expected to launch in 2027. This device might feature touch screen support, a first for the Mac lineup. However, it's important to note that this more affordable MacBook is not the same as the M5 MacBook series, which is expected to launch in 2026.
The M5 MacBook series, which was previously rumoured to launch at the end of this year, has been pushed back to 2026. Meanwhile, the second-generation of the more affordable MacBook is planned for 2027.
Kuo's predictions about the OLED touch screen technology might be related to the next generation M6 processors, not the M5 series. The M5 MacBook series, with its current M4 family of Apple silicon chips, was unveiled in October 2024.
It's worth noting that the launch of the M5 MacBook series is not imminent, with a 2026 release date instead. On the other hand, the more affordable MacBook could launch very soon.
These developments, if confirmed, are set to bring exciting changes to Apple's MacBook lineup, offering users new experiences and possibilities. Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to these anticipated launches.
