Revamped Geely Galaxy E5 Electric SUV Debuts with Reduced Cost and Enhanced Driving Distance
The Chinese automaker Geely has launched an updated version of its popular electric SUV, the Galaxy E5. Priced competitively and offering a strong range, the E5 is poised to challenge the BYD Yuan Plus in the global market.
Starting at RMB 109,800 ($15,340), the new E5 represents a decrease from its predecessor's RMB 112,800 price tag. For overseas markets, the E5 has been renamed Eour X.
The E5 is aimed at the global market and is available in right-hand drive variants. It has five variants, with prices ranging from RMB 109,800 to RMB 145,800.
The electric motor in the Geely Galaxy E5 delivers a peak power of 160 kW and a peak torque of 320 Nm. The two lower-priced variants are equipped with a 60.22-kWh battery pack, providing a range of 530 kilometers. The other three variants are equipped with a 68.39-kWh battery pack, offering a range of 610 kilometers.
The BYD Yuan Plus, another contender in the compact electric SUV segment, offers CLTC range options of 430 kilometers and 510 kilometers.
The Geely Galaxy E5 can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds, making it a strong performer in its class.
In terms of pricing, the Geely Galaxy E5 Intelligent Driving Edition is priced at approximately 106,000 RMB (around USD 14,600), which is about 4,000 RMB (USD 550) cheaper than the BYD Yuan Plus. In Nepal, the Geely Galaxy E5 is offered within a price range of Rs. 58 to 68 lakh (roughly USD 70,000 to 82,000 after conversion), positioning it as a premium but competitive option in that market.
The updated E5 offers two range options: 530 kilometers and 610 kilometers, an improvement over the predecessor's ranges. With its lower price point and longer officially claimed range, the Geely Galaxy E5 creates pricing pressure on the BYD Yuan Plus.
Both SUVs likely have similar performance profiles, but the Galaxy E5 stands out with the longer officially claimed range and premium tech features like a large Flyme Auto OS-powered touchscreen and advanced driver assistance systems.
Geely's sales have seen significant growth over the past year, increasing the company's share of the Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) market. In the first half of the year, Geely sold 1,409,180 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 47.45 percent. Geely Galaxy sold 548,408 vehicles in the first half of the year, a year-on-year increase of 232.00 percent.
In conclusion, the Geely Galaxy E5 offers a competitive edge in price and range over the BYD Yuan Plus, making it a strong contender in the compact electric SUV segment in 2025.
