Renault, Managem Partner for Low-Carbon Cobalt in Morocco

Renault Group and Managem Group have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to secure a supply of low-carbon cobalt sulfate for batteries. The agreement, signed in the presence of Moroccan Minister of Industry and Trade Ryad Mezzour, aims to reduce the environmental footprint of electric vehicles and supports Renault's goal of carbon neutrality in Europe by 2040.

Managem Group plans to invest in a factory in Morocco to transform cobalt ore into cobalt sulfate. The plant will be built at the Guemassa industrial complex, with the specific project name yet to be disclosed. Renault Group has guaranteed a significant supply of this low-carbon cobalt sulfate, representing an annual battery production capacity of up to 15 GWh. Managem Group will supply 5,000 tonnes of cobalt sulfate per year for 7 years, starting in 2025.

The partnership aims to reduce environmental impact through energy efficiency and green energy use. Renault Group aims to reduce the carbon footprint of its batteries by 20% by 2025 and 35% by 2030. Gianluca De Ficchy, Alliance Purchasing EVP, emphasized the importance of traceability and decarbonization of battery raw materials.

The collaboration between Renault Group and Managem Group marks a new stage in the strategic partnership between Morocco and Renault Group. It is a step towards reducing the environmental footprint of electric vehicles and supports Renault's commitment to sustainability and carbon neutrality.
