Reduction in Model Y price for Canadian buyers by Tesla, reaching approximately CAD 20,000, and inclusion of Diamond Black paint finish.
In an effort to bypass a costly 25% import tariff on U.S.-made vehicles, Tesla has decided to import the Model Y from its Gigafactory in Berlin to Canada. This strategic move has led to a significant price reduction for the Model Y, making it more affordable for Canadian consumers.
The Canadian government imposed 100% tariffs on all Chinese-made EVs last year, making it impossible for Tesla to import vehicles built at Giga Shanghai. Consequently, Tesla has turned to Germany as an alternative production location.
The Model Y's price in Canada has been lowered to CAD $64,990, a decrease of around CAD $20,000 from its pre-tariff price of CAD $69,990. This price drop brings the Model Y's price back down to below pre-tariff levels, making it more competitive in the Canadian market.
The long delivery window for Model Y orders placed today, estimated for September or October 2025, may be due to logistical challenges associated with importing vehicles from Germany. However, this long delivery window could also be an attempt to restore some sales volume for the Canadian market.
Tesla has also introduced the Diamond Black paint option for Canadian buyers, priced at CAD $2,000. This option was previously limited to U.S. buyers.
Interestingly, all other Tesla vehicles in Canada have maintained their tariff-pricing and have not seen any price reductions. This suggests that Tesla may be focusing on making the Model Y more competitive in the Canadian market, particularly as competitors like the Nissan Leaf crossover emerge.
Giga Berlin is the only factory that produces the Model Y, making it the ideal location for Tesla to source the Model Y from to avoid tariffs. This decision has allowed Tesla to remain competitive in the Canadian market and continue to offer its electric vehicles to Canadian consumers.
