Redesigned Hyundai Tucson now boasts a hybrid powertrain, offering a fuel-efficient mid-size SUV option.

The streets aren't filled with Hyundai's electric Ioniq models, i20, i30, or even the stylish Kona. Instead, it's the slightly elusive Tucson dominating the view — a mid-size SUV that's hard to resist, despite its tongue-twisting name. The average citizen might stumble over its pronunciation, but they undoubtedly appreciate the Tucson's comfortable, spacious, and affordable luxury. This 4.52-meter-tall all-rounder, positioned between the compact and mid-size categories, starts at a modest 35,740 euros.
From a basic setup, the Tucson boasts plenty of display, LED headlights, navigation, parking sensors, and a rearview camera. Its refined design and European touch appeal to many, although we didn't test the base variant during our latest evaluation. Instead, Hyundai is excited to announce the arrival of a new plug-in hybrid, compatible with front-wheel drive. Priced at 44,690 euros, this front-wheel-drive model offers a more affordable yet still whopping 252 horsepower.
The Power of Push - Front-Wheel Drive Hybrid Tussle
The front-wheel-drive Tucson's swift acceleration speed is a pleasant surprise. Despite shedding over 60 kilograms compared to its all-wheel-drive counterpart, this model allegedly reaches highway speed 0.2 seconds faster (7.9 seconds) [4]. However, traction can be a concern when the engines are fully utilized. Rapid acceleration from a stoplight or a cautious overtaking maneuver at low speeds can catch drivers off guard. Regardless, it's fair to say that the drive performs satisfactorily under everyday commuting conditions.
While the plug-in hybrid system provides smooth power transitions, it's essential to maximize electric driving for the best performance. The battery can be fully charged in under two hours with 7.2 kW [4] — as long as a compatible charger is available nearby. Fuel economy benefits are substantial when driving in electric mode, especially when incorporating regenerative braking.
A Comfortable Companion for Miles - The Tucson's Inside Story
Comfort and convenience are the Tucson's forte. Supportive seats and an optional adaptive suspension ensure a relaxing ride, making the Tucson a formidable vehicle for long-distance trips. In terms of space, the Tucson sets the bar high. With the rear seats folded down, the cargo space swells to a handy 1,721 liters. Even with the seats in position, just over 600 liters remain available. The only caveat is the Tucson's towing capacity, which trails slightly behind its peers at 1.2 tons.

The Tucson's success may not only lie in its refined driving characteristics and comfortable ride but also its wealth of powertrain options, including various hybrid combustion engines and the classic diesel engine.
