Quantum Key Distribution Simplified: PoC Unveiled at ECOC 2025

A groundbreaking proof-of-concept (PoC) was unveiled at the European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC) 2025 in Copenhagen. The PoC, led by Coherent Corp., CUbIQ Technologies, HPE Networking, and Liberty Global, aims to simplify Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and enable quantum-secure MACsec encryption without a dedicated QKD solution.

The PoC, implemented by ADVA, demonstrates a simplified, integrated approach to QKD. Previously, QKD required large, dedicated 19-inch hardware. CUbIQ Technologies developed a compact CV-QKD transceiver for the PoC, compatible with HPE's Juniper switches and routers. This marks a significant step towards making QKD more accessible and affordable.

The PoC aims to enable quantum-secure MACsec encryption based on QKD key exchange. However, the market readiness of this PoC is not yet known. The team behind the PoC is currently evaluating its potential and exploring further developments.

The joint PoC presented at ECOC 2025 showcases a simplified, integrated approach to QKD, moving away from the traditional large, dedicated hardware. While the market readiness is yet to be determined, this development brings us closer to widespread adoption of quantum-secure communication.
