Prohibition on Nighttime Driving Now Enforced
In the Ennepe-Ruhr district, a new regulation has been introduced to protect small nocturnal animals such as hedgehogs. The night-time operation ban for lawn mowing robots is outlined in a general decree on the district administration's website, www.en-kreis.de.
A general decree is an administrative decision issued by the district administration, applying generally or to a group, to order, prohibit, or permit certain behaviours. This decree aims to minimise disturbances and reduce the risk of harming vulnerable wildlife species during their active hours at night.
For garden owners, this means scheduling their robotic lawn mowers to operate only during permitted daytime hours. While this may require adjustments to usual lawn maintenance routines, it ensures the safety of nocturnal animals that might otherwise be injured or distressed by lawn mowers operating in the dark.
This measure is part of a growing commitment to biodiversity and animal protection in residential areas. It creates a safer habitat for hedgehogs and similar small wildlife by reducing noise, mechanical hazards, and disturbances during their peak activity times at night.
In addition to this ban, the district encourages garden owners to create natural and native garden designs in 2024. Hedges and bushes made from native plants can provide safe connections between different garden areas, while large piles of dry leaves, untreated wood, hedgehog houses, insect-friendly wildflowers, herbs, and shrubs are beneficial for hedgehogs.
