In a significant shift towards the future of work, Microsoft's 2025 Work Trend Index predicts that technology, particularly AI, will significantly impact how organisations operate. According to Jared Spartaro, CMO of AI at Work for Microsoft, getting the human-agent ratio right will be critical and task-specific.

The report, based on a survey of 31,000 people globally, Microsoft 365 Telemetry, and LinkedIn hiring trends, suggests that we will be working with more AI agents in the future. The research indicates that people prefer using AI to enhance, not replace, the value humans provide.

One of the key findings is the increasing adoption of AI agents to automate work streams or business processes. Currently, 46% of leaders surveyed by Microsoft reported that their companies are already using agents for such purposes. By 2025, AI is expected to transition from a back-office function to a daily partner in productivity. Four in ten leaders believe their staff will be training and managing AI agents within four years.

The report highlights the benefits of this collaboration. AI agents are capable of initiating action, managing projects, and adapting in real time. They are appreciated for their constant availability and inability to judge, making them valuable tools in customer service, marketing, and product development.

However, the report also acknowledges the need for skill development and training. There is a noted gap in AI familiarity between leaders and employees, which emphasizes the need for investing in people and nurturing new skills. This calls for creating a culture where every employee is equipped to collaborate effectively with AI agents, unlocking the full potential of the workforce.

Microsoft views AI agents as coworkers rather than software. Every staffer will become the "boss" of AI agents, but this isn't a sudden shift to a flat organisational chart or equality for all employees. The human-agent ratio will be task-specific, with AI agents taking over repetitive tasks to allow employees to focus on complex problem-solving and creative work.

The report also addresses concerns around privacy, transparency, and credit. 17% of respondents use AI to avoid human judgement, finding it more private. However, 8% use AI to avoid sharing credit for work. This highlights the need for clear guidelines around AI usage and credit attribution in the workplace.
