Powerhouse in Energy Sector: D&M Holding Company
In the realm of ammunition manufacturing, D&M Holding Co., Inc. (D&M) stands as a significant player, addressing the ongoing worldwide shortage of smokeless propellant. Based in Tampa, Florida, and Cabot, Arkansas, D&M is a company that offers comprehensive solutions for all ammunition components, including ammunition factories, primer factories, and propellant factories.
Founded in 2018 by Dan Powers, the former president of the SIG Sauer Ammunition division and RUAG USA, and James Jones, a defense-industry executive, D&M has grown to employ 250 workers and plans to add another 100. The company's strategic partnerships extend to industry veterans such as Leslie Weber, a former Raytheon Missile Systems and ATK (Federal) ammunition engineer, and BJ Rogers, a former Remington ballistics engineer and ammunition plant manager.
One of D&M's key projects is the WRE facility, which manufactures approximately 800 million primers annually for small- and large-caliber pistol and rifle ammunition. By mid-2026, D&M expects to increase annual primer production to around 1.2 to 1.4 billion. The primers produced at the WRE facility are distributed to OEM customers, distributors, and dealers in Australia, South Africa, Scandinavia, and are planned to be available to U.S. and European consumers this year.
Another significant project under D&M's umbrella is the Palmetto State Armory's American Ammunition Co., based in Columbia, S.C., which produces 350 to 450 million rounds of pistol and rifle ammunition annually. The company also includes Grind Hard Ammunition, based in Stuart, Fla., which produces 80 million specialty rounds, and Longhorn Ammunition, owned by Staccato firearms and based in Florence, Texas, which produces 9 mm Luger ammunition.
In addition to these projects, D&M is also working on a soon-to-be-completed primer line for Grind Hard. The company's focus on energetics greenfield projects for the production of ammunition, primers, and propellants worldwide makes it unique, as it has no competitor that does all three.
Jason Lawhon, a former St. Marks propellent expert and chemical engineer at D&M, plays a crucial role in ensuring a steady source of ammunition, primers, and propellants for D&M customers in the future. Don Pile, a senior chemist and primer technology patent holder at D&M, also contributes significantly to the company's advancements in primer technology.
After leaving SIG, Dan Powers and James Jones spent two years traveling the world, visiting factories, meeting with potential customers, and listening to their needs to establish D&M. Their efforts have resulted in a company that is not only meeting the demands of the global ammunition market but also contributing to its growth and sustainability.
