Get ready for potential changes in Danish telecommunications, all thanks to a forthcoming defense agreement between Denmark and the United States. According to IT Watch, a specialist Danish media outlet, this agreement may disrupt Danish radio frequencies, causing trouble for both users and telecom companies alike.

Lars Dittmann, a researcher at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) who specializes in network technology and service platforms, voiced his concerns. He pointed out that the Danish government is allegedly granting the U.S. military broad powers to use Danish radio frequencies, with no distinction between wartime and peacetime activities.

The agreement, set to be approved by the Danish parliament on June 11th, permits the U.S. to station soldiers in Denmark. The deal was negotiated during the Biden administration and enjoys majority support, making its adoption likely. Initially regarded as relatively uncontroversial, the deal has faced renewed scrutiny due to changes in U.S.-Danish relations.

The agreement stems from December 2023 and was triggered by events such as President Donald Trump's pursuit of Greenland and statements concerning the war between Ukraine and Russia. These developments have prompted some opposition politicians to question the deal.

Dittmann drew attention to a draft regulation from the Danish Agency for Digital Government (Digitaliseringsstyrelsen), which is currently under review. The draft suggests that the U.S. military could have unregulated access to Danish telecommunications, potentially causing disruptions during military exercises.

This could mean that ordinary Danes may find themselves without mobile network connectivity while exercises are underway, Dittmann asserted. The Danish telecommunications industry association, Teleindustrien, shares this concern as well.

While the details of the agreement are still being hashed out, it's essential to consider the potential consequences for Danish telecommunications networks and companies. Additionally, discussions on regulatory changes, data security concerns, and data sovereignty might arise as a result of this agreement, requiring careful attention from all involved parties.

Stay tuned for further updates as this situation develops!
