In a significant step towards a greener future, Fukuoka City, Japan, is making strides in the development of a hydrogen society. Mayor Soichiro Takashima was present at the city's debut event, reaffirming Fukuoka's commitment to this ambitious goal.

The event was not just a local affair. It attracted the attention of SUGIZO, a renowned guitarist and violinist for popular rock bands such as Luna Sea and X Japan. SUGIZO, who is also a user of the first generation Mirai, expressed his views on hydrogen technology, highlighting its potential possibilities.

The city's hydrogen society initiative has been bolstered by its partnership with Toyota. In 2015, Fukuoka City installed the world's first station to supply hydrogen made from sewage. Since then, the collaboration between the two entities has continued to strengthen, with Fukuoka City and Toyota working together towards a hydrogen society. This partnership was further solidified in 2022, with the continuation of the Hydrogen Leader City Project and the signing of an agreement with Toyota.

As part of this practical hydrogen utilization effort, Fukuoka City has introduced Toyota's hydrogen-powered garbage trucks and ambulances. These vehicles, which leverage hydrogen fuel cells to reduce emissions, help decarbonize municipal services and showcase hydrogen's viability as a clean energy solution in urban settings.

The collaboration between local governments, companies like Toyota, and hydrogen industry stakeholders is central to advancing the hydrogen society strategy in Fukuoka. Activities such as the Hydrogen Industry Growth Meeting, which gather various participants from industry and government, contribute to sharing knowledge, fostering partnerships, and scaling hydrogen use cases like FCEV emergency and waste management vehicles.

On March 8, Fukuoka City announced the debut of an FCEV garbage truck and the start of testing an FCEV ambulance. The event, which included the display of the newest Crown Sedan FCEV, was a new step forward in the development of a hydrogen society. The Crown sedan has been transformed into an FCEV, marking the first time such vehicles have been used in Japan.

Chairman Akio Toyoda emphasized the special meaning behind the Crown FCEV, stating its importance in supporting carbon neutrality and a hydrogen society. The event, hosted by Fukuoka Toyota, also featured the Hydrogen Energy and Mobility Summit, further underscoring Fukuoka City's commitment to this vision.

In summary, Fukuoka City is progressing its hydrogen society goals by introducing Toyota's hydrogen-powered garbage trucks and ambulances, supported by a comprehensive regional strategy and industry collaboration coordinated through the Fukuoka Hydrogen Green Growth Strategy Council. This initiative is a testament to the city's dedication to a cleaner, greener future.
