Photovoltaic Plants Surpass Onshore Wind, Lead Renewables in Germany
In a significant shift, photovoltaic plants have surpassed onshore wind power, accounting for 19 percent of the energy mix in 2025, compared to 21 percent in 2024. This change comes as gross electricity generation reached 366.0 terawatt hours after three quarters, a 0.9 percent increase from the same period last year.
The first quarter of 2025 saw a slow start for renewables, but this was offset by increased photovoltaic generation and more wind power in the summer months. As a result, photovoltaics has become the largest renewable source after nine months, accounting for 21 percent of gross electricity consumption. Despite a slight decrease in consumption, renewables covered almost 57 percent of gross electricity consumption in the first three quarters.
The increase in renewable energy is reflected in the newly installed capacity, which is five percent higher than in the same period last year. Notably, photovoltaic plants generated more solar power in the first nine months of 2025 than in the entire year 2024, with a 24 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024. Statkraft, Europe's largest producer of renewable energy, is leading the charge in Germany, actively expanding wind and solar projects with a pipeline of about 1,900 MW.
Renewable energy generation in Germany continues to grow, with photovoltaics leading the way. Despite a slight dip in consumption, renewables remain a significant part of the energy mix, covering almost 57 percent of gross electricity consumption in the first three quarters of 2025. With leading providers like Statkraft expanding their projects, the future of renewable energy in Germany looks promising.
