Pakistan Plans to Establish AI and Research & Development Centers under Prime Minister's Guidance, announced by Senior Advisor to the Prime Minister
In a significant move, Haroon Akhtar Khan, the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for Industries and Production, has announced plans to establish a research and development center in Gujranwala. This center aims to boost industrial innovation and growth, as part of a broader strategy to modernise Pakistan's industrial sector.
During a meeting with heads of the Technology Upgradation and Skill Development Company (TUSDEC) and the Pakistan Industrial Technical Assistance Centre (PITAC), Khan outlined his vision for the center. He plans to create a Mining and Mineral Processing Technology Centre, a Women Digital Skills Development Centre, and an Artificial Intelligence and Digital Twin Centre.
Khan's ambition is to see Pakistan keep pace with the global transformation in artificial intelligence (AI), a field that is progressing rapidly worldwide. He has expressed a desire for Pakistani institutions to learn from advanced international models, citing Uzbekistan's Techno Park as an example. Innovations such as solar water heaters and prepaid billing systems show the potential for such models to inspire and drive technological advancements in Pakistan.
Recognising the role of students in the country's industrial and technological development, Khan also plans to meet and encourage PITAC students who have excelled in training programs. He has praised PITAC's introduction of modern skills and English language courses for students, calling them vital for competitiveness in the global job market.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is also committed to upgrading Pakistan's industrial and technological landscape. As part of this commitment, seafood processing and packaging plants, modern abattoirs, and meat processing facilities will be established across the country.
Experts believe that an AI policy could revolutionise Pakistan's economy. With the establishment of the new research and development center and the focus on AI, Khan's initiatives are a step towards realising this potential.
In conclusion, Pakistan's industrial sector is set for a transformation under the leadership of Haroon Akhtar Khan. The new initiatives aim to boost innovation, modernise skills, and drive the country towards a more competitive position in the global economy.
