Old Computex marquee utilizes Windows 7, with Microsoft pushing for the transition beyond Windows 10
=====================================================================
At Computex 2031, the world's largest PC-focused trade show being held at the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center, visitors can expect to see digital signage running on various operating systems. While the main display at Computex 2022 most likely used a modern Windows version, such as Windows 11 Professional 64-bit, a look at the current digital signage landscape suggests a mix of old and new.
Windows 7, which debuted in October of 2009, continues to be used for digital signage in some cases. This is primarily due to factors such as stability, legacy software compatibility, and cost considerations. Digital signage systems often operate on dedicated hardware with stable, tested software configurations where upgrading the OS could risk disruptions. Many digital signage solutions, particularly those designed years ago, rely on Windows 7-compatible drivers and applications. Additionally, older chipsets and lower-cost AMD processors, which remain common in signage hardware, sometimes still run Windows 7 or Windows 8 effectively.
On the other hand, Windows 11, with its features like Recall and Copilot, has been met with mixed reactions. Some users find these features intrusive, preferring the simplicity of Windows 10, which many consider sufficient for their needs. Microsoft is indeed working to transition users from Windows 10 to its latest operating system, but the process is ongoing.
The author, who has been using Windows 11 since 2021, anticipates seeing digital signage running Windows 10 at Computex 2031. The author's favourite Windows feature since XP added Wi-Fi support is Aero Snap, a feature of Windows 7. The author does not express dislike for Windows 11 in terms of general usability.
Interestingly, the main entrance display at Hall 1 of Computex is currently running Windows 7. This could be a holdover from previous years or a deliberate choice based on the system's stability and compatibility with the digital signage setup.
In conclusion, while Computex 2031's slogan is "AI Next", the digital signage landscape at the event is likely to be a blend of old and new operating systems. Windows 7, with its proven track record in digital signage, is expected to be present, alongside Windows 10 and potentially Windows 11, as the industry continues to evolve and adapt.
